Quebec Skilled Worker Program to open November 4, 2015

by Shani Hanwella

With the Express Entry pool obstructing entry into the Federal Skilled Worker and other economic programs, needless to say candidates are frustrated with the uncertainly revolving around the application process for immigrating to Canada. The Quebec Skilled Worker program is a good alternative, if one meets the criteria and get his or her application in fast.

A maximum of 6,300 applications will be received for this program. The most recent QSWP application cycle opened in 2014 with an intake of 6,500 applications. This cap was reached within four months, and it is expected that demand for the upcoming application cycle will be similarly popular, perhaps even more so than the 2014 cycle.

Features of the Quebec Skilled Worker program:

  • Absence of French but points available for English/French
  • No Job offer required
  • Points for area of training and education
  • Points for spouse and children
  • No selection pool – no invitations to apply
  • Can also apply while remaining in the Express Entry pool
  • Direct applications – first come first served
  • Faster processing with removal of adaptability threshold

The 2015/2016 application intake cycle will be split into two periods. The first part will run from November 4 – December 15, 2015 and will be limited to postal applications and the second part from January 18 - March 31, 2016 by online applications.

The successful applicants will be issued a Quebec Selection Certificate with which they will be eligible to apply for a permanent resident visa.

To qualify under the Quebec Skilled Worker program, a single applicant must score at least 49 points based on the selection criteria. An applicant with a spouse or common-law partner must score at least 57 points.

The Quebec Immigration selection factors may be summarized as follows:

Education Up to 14 points (Cut off Score = 2 points)
